Each one of their stages is precious - stop a moment and think back to when he took his first breath or gave you his first smile. Yeah, they change too fast.

Best of luck with school - it's stressful enough without being a parent and a husband, oh, and working full-time!

Going back to school with a job and a kid was hard for me, but I was a better student. I got more out of my classes. My grades overall were better, but I remember one class in particular where I wanted to put more time into the class. I just didn't have anymore time to give. I wasn't choosing between goofing off with my roommates and doing research.

Good luck and stay well!

LOL, well, I can't complain about how long it took you to get back to your blog myself, I'm WAY behind.

I think reading the newspaper is awesome for ideas - you don't even have to make it a big part of the story - have a friend of one of the main characters save a family from a burning building. You could have your character jealous of the attention he's getting, or even notice he's getting a big head for being a local hero.

Some of my favorite news stories are about lotto winners years after the jackpot. You could have one of your characters have a friend that is always broke and have it come out that they once won the lottery and spent everything (a common trend with lotto winners).

Anyway, borrowing from reality is something most of us do instinctively, but doing it consciously can be a fun way to add interest to our stories.

Being a dad is different than I thought. I have taken more of an errand boy role than anything else - run to the store, take something upstairs, clean this, empty that, etc. But I do get time with my son. Donovan will play with me and let me feed him. He listens as I read books or attempt to sing. He will even let me start to change his diaper, but he starts kicking his legs before I finish (I'm slower than mom), so I rarely have that duty. I would be able to answer your question, except everything over the last 10 weeks has been tainted (someone or another in the house has been sick for 10 straight weeks). I hope everything will be easier than I thought once we are all healthy.

As for school, that starts Monday. I'm a little nervous. In truth, I'm scared of what the next two years will be like. It has been over 10 years since I got my bachelors' - and now I am working full time and have a baby.

They're so much fun. So, is being a dad harder or easier than you thought it would be? And have you started school yet?

Yeah, critique burnout was a problem. For next year, we might do it differently – maybe break everyone into two review groups, a sci-fi group and a fantasy group. Don’t know, just thinking out loud. It would cut back on the critiques, both given and received. I believe there were six sci-fi pieces submitted and six fantasy pieces, so it would have been a good split this year. We’ll have to see when we get there.
